Gardening has always been very popular, but it is organic gardening that has really taken off in the last few years or so. Many people are becomingly increasingly aware of the effects that chemicals and pesticides are having on both their plants and the environment. So let me tell you how you can get started as an organic gardener.
One of the first things many aspiring gardeners do is to grow herbs because they are very straight forward. You can either put them outside in your garden or in containers, preferably somewhere sunny, or you can simply grow them inside on a window sill, for instance, because they do not take up very much space.
Indeed there is no need to grow vast quantities of herbs because as any cook will tell you, herbs can last years and years because you only ever use very small quantities when adding them to food. You can of course buy all kinds of herbs from your local supermarket, but it is so much more satisfying when you actually grow them yourself.
Once you have some experience of growing herbs, you may want to try your hand at more ambitious outdoor projects. If you have any kind of garden space you first of all need to prepare your garden by digging it up and preparing the soil, either by hand or using some kind of machinery.
Then you are ready to start your planting. There are all kinds of things you can grow such as fruit, vegetables and flowers. However you always need to bear in mind that there are distinct planting seasons and different things need to be planted at specific times of the year. The good news is that whatever time of the year it is, there will always be something that can be planted in your garden right now. You just need to do your research.
You may well have just moved into a new house, because this is when a lot of people first become interested in organic gardening. In which case you will need to see what plants are already in your garden. You may well have to do some weeding as well in order to see exactly what you have. Then you can decide what you want to get rid of, and what you want to add to your garden.
The first year is a really exciting one because your garden will come to life, particularly as you go through spring and summer. It is then that you can really appreciate your garden because the flowers will be in bloom and many of your fruit and vegetables will be ready to eat.
Of course if you are an organic gardener then you will want to avoid using any chemicals during the year. However you also need to use organic seeds, which can be bought from all garden stores, if you really want to call yourself an organic gardener.
Anyway the point is that gardening is a terrific hobby. In this day and age so many of us are glued to our computers and mobile phones, but taking up gardening will get you outdoors and enjoying the fresh air again. Plus it is enormously satisfying growing your own food organically, and it will of course help you save money as well. So overall I can definitely recommend organic gardening if you haven’t yet taken up this hobby.
